You’ve been ‘Working the Triangles’ that illuminate the clinical work of APT, AEDP, ISTDP and more. Suddenly your client has a breakthrough and is experiencing intense emotions like rage, sexual attraction, terror, sorrow or longing for love. Sometimes its hard to shift with your client in these moments. You’ve been so focused on defenses and anxiety, you just aren’t ready for what is coming next.

In this 2 day intensive workshop, you’ll learn how to cultivate compassion for yourself so that you can learn the art of ‘staying out of the way,’ so you can apply interventions that lengthen an affect exposure or invite the emergence of complex feelings. You’ll work in small groups, watch live demonstrations and consultations, study vignettes of psychotherapy sessions to illustrate interventions and receive 1:1 expert guidance from Kristin Osborn.

By the end of this workshop, you’ll be able to identify your strengths and weaknesses when working with affect and develop a plan of Deliberate Practice to help you continue growing when you return to your clinical work. Participants may bring a video segment of their own work if they desire.

Effectiveness:

APT is an evidence based, integrative treatment model built on modern psychodynamic theory and learning theory. It was developed by Harvard Medical School (HMS) psychologist and researcher, Leigh McCullough, Ph.D . It is effective in treating anxiety, depression, self-defeating behaviors and somatic complaints. Case-series videotaped research over the past 30 years has established the effectiveness of its methods in both short and long term follow-up.

Overall Learning Objectives:

You’ll learn how to comfortably and effectively use exposure and desensitization with adaptive affects when ‘Working the Triangles,’ and how you can invite the emergence of complex feelings. You’ll become an expert at determining the difference between maladaptive and adaptive affect and learn how to feel more comfortable when your client begins experiencing and expressing feelings toward you. You’ll learn steps to take if facing your own affect phobia ‘in session.’

Learning Objectives:

  • How to regulate inhibitory affects (anxiety, fear, shame, guilt, disgust and emotional pain) in a compassionate way
  • How to work with maladaptive emotion, behavior and thinking while increasing motivation for change
  • How to help clients access their adaptive emotions and associated behaviors (self-compassion, happiness, sadness, anger and love)
  • How to work with and expand the PLAY-system
  • How to work with complex feelings
  • Learn how to use the Affect Phobia Test
  • Learn how to use the 10 Session Form

Learning Methods:

  • Video segments of psychotherapy sessions
  • Small Group Interactive Exercises
