It is wise for clinicians to cultivate a healthy respect for maladaptive defenses as how you face them can determine whether or not your client is ‘in treatment’ and on the path to connection- or not. You’ll see a video segment of a psychotherapy session that illustrates the steps you can take to help your client melt their defenses. You’ll also learn why it is important to record sessions so you can evaluate how you are working with defenses by using the following scales to deepen your “deliberate practice”: The Achievement of Therapeutic Objectives Scale (ATOS) developed by Leigh McCullough and ATOS-Therapist developed by Kristin Osborn.
