Boston APT-Core Training
Core Training is a three-year program of Affect Phobia Therapy. The course complies with the International Experiential Dynamic Therapy Association requirements for advanced training. It emphasizes experiential, hands-on learning. On completion of the full three-year course and passing the final exam, you will become a Certified-APT Therapist (Certified APT-Therapist Criteria). Trainees can also apply for a one or two years’ training. Training is spread out over four three-day weekends per year. Kristin Osborn, APT-Supervisor leads the core trainings.
Each block of training is made up of 50% theoretical and clinical instruction and 50% supervision. Trainees are taught to identify Affect Phobias, use Malan’s triangle of conflict and triangle of person, differentiate between adaptive and maladaptive feelings, create a core conflict formulation in collaboration with the patient, and regulate anxiety and confront defenses. As these objectives are mastered, more advanced elements of the model are introduced. Research is an integral part of this program and students are trained to use the Achievement of Therapeutic Objectives Scale (ATOS) to code their own therapy sessions and master therapist sessions. Trainees are required to videotape and present their own work for supervision (transcribing and subtitling in English if the session is in another language).
Applicants are required to provide a curriculum vitae (résumé) detailing their work as a therapist, and a statement of interest (motivation letter) demonstrating motivation for working with an Experiential-Dynamic approach.
